GSE 2011 Photo Contest Announcement - CANCELLED

Submit photos (By Aug. 31)

The GSE is proud to announce a Geotechnical Photography Contest to help celebrate the contribution to society by geotechnical engineering. Submitted photos will be grouped and judged in three categories. In addition to bragging rights, valuable prizes will be awarded to the top photo in each category with an additional prize to the overall best photo. Winning submissions and selected runners-up will be unveiled at the upcoming 2011 Fall Wine & Cheese and then posted on the GSE web site. Photos will be judged according to both artistic merit and the geotechnical story told by the photo.

The contest is open to GSE members only and will close on December 1, 2011 (deadline has been extended).

Contest cancelled due to lack of interest.

Categories:

  1. Under Construction: photographs of geotechnical projects under construction or investigations in progress.
  2. Completed Works: photographs of completed projects with recent or of historical significance.
  3. Natural Phenomenon: can be landforms of particular geotechnical/geological interest like landslides or outcrops of interesting geology or the impact of natural processes on engineered works.

Extra consideration will be given to photos of local interest (located in Edmonton or at least works by Edmonton companies/offices).

Please do not submit:

  • General landscape photographs (even though the soil or rock forming them is ostensibly the domain of geotechnical engineers);
  • Photographs that are predominantly other areas of civil engineering (structures make good photographs but that isn't what we are interested in);
  • Photographs that are predominantly of people even if they are geotechnically-significant people!

Prizes:

  • There will be grand prize awarded to best photograph as chosen by our judges. Two additional prizes will be awarded to the best photograph in each of the two remaining categories.
  • The prizes will be announced at or following the AGM in May.

Submission Instructions:

  • Digital photographs should be submitted to kfroese@thurber.ca. If you are still shooting with film, please submit a scanned version of your photographs.
  • Keep the size of individual emails to less than 10Mb. If you have several photographs you would like to submit at once, please contact kfroese@thurber.ca to make alternate arrangements.
  • Captions or short descriptions to aid in understanding the context of the photo should be included in the body of the email (or on the application form). The required information is location and date of the photography and what is depicted.
  • The photographer needs to be named as do all people who are identifiable in the photograph.
  • Submissions will be accepted until August 31, 2011.
