Post tensioning is a form of prestressing, in which tendons in the concrete are tensioned after concrete has been placed and has gained sufficient compressive strength. The load is transmitted to the concrete through anchorages at the ends of the tendons. It is important to have reliable information about in-place concrete compressive strength to expedite post-tensioning of tendons and to avoid damage to the concrete structure. Evaluation of the in-place concrete compressive strength by Pull Out Testing and Maturity Methods can be an effective way to assess in-place strength. These testing methods were used during construction of Macewan University Centre for Arts and Culture Building which allowed the contractor to reduce the construction schedule by stressing tendons as soon as concrete achieved the required concrete strength. Mechanisms of Pull out Test and Estimating Concrete Strength by the Maturity Method are described in this presentation.

Mr. Oleksandr Lisoivan, P.Eng. is a Project Engineer and has been with Thurber Engineering Ltd. since 2013. Mr. Lisoivan has office, field and laboratory experience in construction materials and geotechnical engineering. Mr. Lisoivan's experience include: concrete condition assessment and investigation, concrete structures service life estimates, pavement design, methodology development and coordination of QA/QC construction materials testing, design of repair strategies for distressed and deteriorated concrete, coordination of Level II bridge deck inspections.
